Our hair loss story and why I started Loving Locks was because my sister Lily got diagnosed with breast cancer in November 2007. Then I realized what she was going through being my baby sister and she’s always had thin hair. I said, “what can I do for her?”

That’s when I started researching where I could go get more education on wigs because we are not taught that in cosmetology. So, I checked into a school in Fort Lauderdale, Florida for a couple of weeks and learned all about medical conditions from cancer patients to alopecia and trichotillomania that involved wigs and hair pieces.

That was the beginning of my journey. And then I really got into it, and it wasn’t because of the money. It was more a ministry…just saving people lives and how they feel about themselves, to help them feel beautiful again. So that was my beginning.

And it’s just an emotional thing when I deal with my clients, the patients that have cancer to trichotillomania to alopecia. Our hair loss story is my story too. I myself suffer with alopecia. So that was another journey I had to go through and share that with clients as they came in. I’ve suffered with alopecia since my 30’s but never knew how to handle it or what I could do about it. It was behind closed doors in the 90’s and you didn’t talk about it.  

I designed my salon to support my clients not just with hair solutions, but emotionally too. Normally alopecia patients will not walk in the door and stay away from a salon because most salons are open concept. My concept is closed, I am very private myself. As soon as alopecia clients walk into Loving Locks, they feel relieved that no one is going to see them or their bald spots. No one is going to see if they have trichotillomania, and they are a victim of pulling out their own hair. Right away all my cancer, alopecia and trichotillomania clients feel at ease and comfortable.
